Emerald Downs is the Thoroughbred racetrack located south of Seattle in Auburn, Washington.

GATES OPEN: Two hours prior to the first race. 11:30 AM on Saturday and Sunday. 5 PM on Friday. Special 11 AM for Opening Day.

Emerald Downs' biggest race is the Longacres Mile. It originated in 1935 and gained significant popularity, partially due to the race's big prize money. It happens every Championship Sunday (August 11 this year), and the purse for 2023 was $150,000.

Seating on the 5th floor is particularly good. As other reviewers have mentioned, the view of Mount Rainier is lovely.

The track conducts several large ungraded stakes and many overnight handicaps and stakes. There are an average of 8 races on week nights, and 10 races per race weekend. Emerald Downs biggest race is the Longacres Mile Handicap, a Grade III event, held in August.

The traditional high point of US horse racing is the Kentucky Derby, held on the first Saturday of May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

As you would expect in the Horse Capital of the World, many champions make their home in Lexington. Kentucky Derby winner Go for Gin, and Standardbred Pacers Western Dreamer and Staying Together all live at the Kentucky Horse Park.

What tribe is Emerald Downs? ›

In 2002, the land where Emerald Downs is situated was purchased by the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe for roughly $70 million. The Tribe purchased the track buildings and facilities and formed Emerald Downs Racing LLC in 2015.

In November 2014, Northwest Racing Associates reached a deal to sell Emerald Downs to the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, which already owned the land the racetrack was on.

Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan, others not yet committed to Preakness Stakes. The Triple Crown features three races for 3-year-old thoroughbred horses, with just weeks separating each event. A horse that emerges victorious in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes is dubbed a Triple Crown winner.

It is renowned for its high-speed corners, elevation changes, and narrow sections that make it one of the toughest tracks in the world. The Nürburgring Nordschleife is a legendary race track located in Nürburg, Germany.

The three races which make up the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred horse racing—the Kentucky Derby (G1), the Preakness Stakes (G1), and the Belmont Stakes (G1)—each provide a test over a different distance at a different venue.

Many people choose to dress up for a day at the races and, although often not mandatory, it is considered to be part of the raceday experience.

Casual looks include smart jeans or chinos for men – you can also wear smart, clean trainers at many courses. For ladies, smart trousers and jeans are also popular with jumpers or blouses depending on the weather. Casual dresses are also a great option.

Ladies - General Admission

There is no formal dress code in General Admission but we recommend smart dress befitting of a raceday occasion. All general admission dining rooms and function venues require smart casual attire.

“The races dress codes are steeped in tradition – this is not the time to wear a strapless dresses, cut outs or mini dresses (save those for parties) so ensure that you are well versed on the formalities of the Carnival dress codes,” she says.
